Chapter One

What I love about you

The seat next to me

We met sophomore year because you needed a pen.

You never gave it back.

A few weeks later, I stopped looking for somewhere to sit when I walked into class.

There was just the seat next to you.

I don't think either of us knew then how much life we were going to end up seeing together.

The birthday you didn’t want

You said you didn't want to do anything for your thirtieth, so somehow we ended up in your kitchen at 11 at night with a grocery-store cake and one candle.

Very on brand for us.

I think this is the part of our friendship I love most.

Nothing has to be a big thing to become a memory.

We've seen each other through birthdays, new jobs, bad apartments, breakups, good decisions, terrible ones, and a lot of ordinary Tuesdays.

And somehow, through all of it, there you are.

The last twenty minutes

Everybody else had gone home.

We stayed outside talking about absolutely nothing for another twenty minutes.

We've had bigger nights than this one.

I don't even know why this is one of the pictures I wanted in here.

It just feels like us.

What you gave me

You are the reason I stopped apologizing for taking up space. I don't think you know that. You made room for me so consistently that eventually I learned to do it for myself. That is one of the strange things about growing up with someone. Sometimes they change you so slowly that you don't notice it happening. Then one day you look at the person you became and realize they are part of the reason you got there. So now you know.

Some things are easier to say out loud

Somehow, we grew up together. Happy 30th, Maya.

One person made this

A few memories. A few photos. One voice note.
That’s enough.
