Anniversaries
Meaningful anniversary gifts.
An anniversary is an audit of a shared life. The gifts that mean something take that seriously — they say what the year contained, what it cost, and what it built. Here's how to give one, whether it's your own anniversary or someone else's.
Two different gifts, often confused
There are two anniversary gifts, and they need different things. The first is from one partner to the other, and its job is intimacy: to say the thing that daily life doesn't leave room for. The second is from someone outside the couple — a child, a friend, a sibling — and its job is perspective: to show the couple what their relationship has looked like from the outside.
Both fail for the same reason: generality. "Happy anniversary, here's to many more" is not information. Details are.
If you're giving to your partner
Every one of these is essentially free and consistently outlasts the object gifts.
- A one-page account of the year: what happened, what was hard, what you're proud of, what they did that you noticed.
- A list of the ordinary things — the exact way they make coffee, what they say when they're tired, the sound of them coming home.
- The annual letter: start this year and keep it in a single box. In twenty years, it will be the best thing you own.
- A return trip to somewhere from your first year, with a photograph taken from the same angle.
- A recording of you telling the story of the day you knew.
- A printed book of your photographs from the year, with real captions rather than dates.
If you're giving to a couple
Couples are hard to shop for jointly, because the obvious gifts land on the household rather than the relationship. The way in is to give them the view they've never had.
Ask their children, their oldest friends, their siblings, and the people who were at the wedding to each answer one question: what have you learned from watching these two? Collected together, that becomes a portrait of a marriage nobody in it can see.
A Preserve is built for this: contributions come in privately, get assembled into one thing, and are revealed on the anniversary. See a finished example, or read the anniversary tribute overview.
Prompts that produce real writing
Whether you're writing yourself or asking others, use a question rather than a blank page.
- What is one moment from this relationship you think about when you think about love?
- What did they teach you about staying?
- What did they get right that nobody thanked them for?
- Describe them in one specific gesture rather than one adjective.
- For children of the couple: when did you first realize what your parents had?
Milestone years worth extra effort
Some anniversaries carry more weight and justify a bigger gathering effort.
- The first — the archive starts here. Whatever format you choose, choose one you can repeat.
- The tenth — long enough that the early years have started to blur. Write them down while they're still recoverable.
- The twenty-fifth — the point where children are old enough to have their own account of the marriage.
- The fiftieth — the last realistic chance to gather the people who were there at the beginning.
What to avoid
Well-meaning anniversary gifts that don't land.
- Anything for the house. It becomes a chore, not a gift.
- A card with only a signature. Ten sentences would have taken four minutes.
- A surprise party for people who don't like surprise parties.
- A gift that only acknowledges one partner's contribution to the relationship.
One last thing
Nobody keeps a record of a marriage as it happens. The years compress, the early details vanish, and eventually the story becomes four or five anecdotes told at dinners. An anniversary gift is a chance to rescue some of it before it goes.

Frequently asked
Common questions
What is the most meaningful anniversary gift?
A record of the relationship itself. A written account of the year, a letter naming what changed, or a collection of memories from the people who watched it happen. Anniversaries reward specificity — the details of your actual life together are the material.
What's a meaningful anniversary gift for a partner rather than a couple?
Write the year down. One page describing what happened, what was hard, what they did that you noticed, and what you're looking forward to. Doing that every year builds an archive that becomes the most valuable thing either of you owns.
What do you give a couple for their anniversary?
Give them the outside view. They know their own story; they don't know how it looked to their children, their friends, or their parents. Collected memories from those people is a gift they cannot make for themselves.
Do meaningful anniversary gifts need to be expensive?
No — anniversaries are the clearest case where effort beats price. The gifts couples still have decades later are almost always paper: letters, photographs, notes, lists.
What if we've missed the anniversary?
Give it late and say so. A gift that arrives two weeks after with real writing in it is better than a gift that arrived on time with nothing in it. Nobody has ever been upset about being seen slightly late.
Don't just read about it. Start.
