Questions to ask someone who shaped your life
The people who shaped us often have no idea how much they mattered. These questions help you draw out the stories, values, and quiet moments behind their influence — and give you something to preserve forever.
Who they were before you knew them
Start by understanding the person as more than their role in your life. Their earlier chapters explain a lot.
- What did you want to be when you were young?
- What was a defining moment in your life before we met?
- Who shaped you when you were my age?
- What did you believe about the world then that you still believe now?
What they taught you
Lessons are rarely delivered as speeches. They're lived. Ask about the moments when something important was passed on.
- What's something you hoped I would learn from watching you?
- Was there a moment you were worried I wouldn't understand something?
- What skill or value do you think I carry because of you?
- What's a lesson you learned the hard way that you wanted to spare me?
A moment that mattered
Specific memories carry more weight than general praise. Ask for the scenes, not the summaries.
- What's a moment with me that you still think about?
- When did you feel most proud of me?
- Was there a time you almost gave up on me? What happened?
- What's a small thing I did that meant more than I realized?
What you carry forward
This connects their life to yours in a lasting way. It turns a conversation into a legacy.
- What do you see in me that reminds you of yourself?
- What do you hope I do with what you've taught me?
- What's something you want me to remember when you're not here?
- If you could leave me one sentence to live by, what would it be?
What you want them to know
The final questions are for you, not them. Don't leave them unasked — or unanswered.
- What would my life look like if I had never known you?
- What's the most important thing you've given me?
- What do I do now because of you?
- What do you want to thank them for, even if it feels too big to say?
Don't just read about it. Start.
Preserve helps you collect the stories, voice, and lessons of the people who shape your life — whether they're still with you or not.
